8 Things Every ‘Marketing Technologist’ Should Know

Recently, I came across an article by Scott Brinker titled, “8 Things Every Marketing Technologist Should Know.”  The article examined the term “marketing technologist”, which is sometimes broadly interpreted as anyone who exerts technology in the field of marketing. However, since Brinker believes everyone in marketing should be doing that to some degree these days; it makes sense to differentiate what a marketing technologist does above and beyond that.

He drafted a set of skills: the inner ring being what every marketing technologist should be familiar with — and proficient or expert in at least two or three of them. And then the outer ring, extrapolating more specific capabilities that they should be getting themselves familiar with.

By implementing all of the techniques in the inner ring, you can start getting the full effects out of your marketing efforts.  By learning and becoming familiar with the more technological, outside ring, you will start to really see the internal and external benefits.

  1. I really wish we got a well versed education in the CCB @ UMD focusing on all aspects mentioned in the inner ring. I appreciate the education gained while attending UMD and feel as though the marketing program was more than just business school. Communications and psychology were two focal points that were covered in our marketing program however it would have been more helpful it was more hands on and technology based. For example, web mechanics…I firmly believe some of the design courses focusing on HTML and web design should have been requirements. Do you feel the same??

    We got a great education at UMD – however, traditional marketing has shifted so much in the past few years, a lot of curriculums need to be revamped!
    A lot of the inner circle is learned through real world experience in my opinion. Although social media was just beginning when I was in school (Dr. Barnes stared teaching a class), business models 101 and the basics of consumer behavior have all played a huge role in my career now.
    Sophomore year I remember wanting to have a graphic design or web development minor, but it wasn’t offered. Instead I was an English (Writing/Communications) minor and even those basic communication and writing skills have helped me with my marketing/social media/blogging as well!
    This is definitely what higher education is for – I’m now going back to school for computer science and getting into software, database, and UX more. A lot of the stuff I know now though is from my coworkers!

  3. It’s crazy how much things have changed in just a few years. I graduated in ’09 and got a degree in marketing. Guess how much technology was built into the curriculum? The skills we had to put on resumes after graduating were like “great interpersonal skills, creative thinker.” Being able to write a marketing plan can only get you so far. Everything I’ve learned about marketing tech. has been on the job. Would have been huge to have that experience in college. Thanks for sharing this article.

    • Maybe I’m bias because I took a lot of e-comm/MIS courses. Regardless, I agree with both of you that there wasn’t enough technology in the curriculum. Most of the social media and tech I have learned has been through my job, internships, and real life experience. I read more and more now about colleges starting to really integrate social media and tech into their classes – it’s a great thing to see!

    Yes it’s very important that we all get well rounded. I’ve been trying to coin the title “Web professional” for some time now.

    Anyone that possess a major set of various tools, techniques and skills to put the web to work – is a great example.
